Born on a southern Missouri farm, Kauffman started a pharmaceutical business in the garage of his home in and built it into Marion Laboratories, an industry leader. He set up the Kauffman Foundation to fund several unique projects in Kansas City, starting with Project Star, a program to teach youngsters how to resist peer pressure at the age they are most vulnerable to involvement with drugs.
