But back to the original question then - I was going to say the designed was a poker player, but I guess the images go way back before poker.
Let's try to look it up as to why. I just looked up playing cards design history and it says that the design we're talking about came about either in or and the one-eyed feature has significance in certain games. There are other things of note that I wasn't aware of - some kings have moustaches and others do not, some have swords and others have axes, and one king who supposedly represents Charlemagne seems to be stabbing himself through the head.
I certainly have noticed these things but didn't take much notice, I guess, and haven't heard about these features in games, but there could be patter possibilities in tricks. In a trick like Larry Jennings' The Visitor, you wouldn't want your viewers to be aware of the different things the - in this case Queens - are holding. You wouldn't mention it in the patter for that trick. I can't think of any patter ideas off the bat, but everything unusual is possible fodder for new patter -.
