Elijah who is to come

Some may wonder how can it be possible for someone that lived during the Old Testament era to return in the future. This question is truly a riddle. Where is Elijah now? No one can say with precision, and knowing where he currently resides apparently is not really that important.

Therefore, Elijah is not dead, and Malachi literally meant that the Lord would send him back to earth before the execution of his righteous judgment. Having answered the first question we now come to the second more important question, which is this: do you believe that God always keeps his promises?

Are you Elijah? Some may ask that if the answer to this riddle is so obvious, then why is there any confusion in the first place? The confusion arises because of other passages in the Bible closely associate John with Elijah.

Ezekiel And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, for they are a rebellious house, yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.

Ezekiel ,11 Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, all my words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart, and hear with thine ears….

John I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Matthew And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? Mark And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? Context Crossref Comment Greek. Verse Click for Chapter. New International Version And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.

New Living Translation And if you are willing to accept what I say, he is Elijah, the one the prophets said would come. Jesus, though, insists that John was the fulfillment of Malachi's prophecy that Elijah would be sent to prepare the way for Christ.

John certainly came "in the spirit and power of Elijah," as the angel said. Jesus adds "if you are willing to accept it," implying that He knew not everyone would grasp that this was true or what it meant.

If John the Baptist was the fulfillment of the promise of the return of Elijah to usher in the day of the Lord, it means Jesus was claiming to be the Lord.
